Breaking down on the motorway can be super stressful, but don't worry, we've got your back!
Advice

I've broken down on the motorway - now what?

Breaking down on the motorway can be super stressful, but don't worry, we've got your back!

In the stress of a breakdown, it can sometimes be difficult to know what to do - a quick survey of our team found that half were a little unsure of what they should do in this situation. So, we put together this handy guide to help you stay safe.

Where it is safe to do so, you should always try to get your car to the left hand side of the road. In the worst scenario, where your car breaks down on the motorway and you can't get it to the hard shoulder, don't panic! Take a deep breath, and call 999 immediately to inform the emergency services. Do not try to get out of the car.

If you've broken down and are stuck in a lane on the motorway, stay in the car, and call 999 immediately

If you have managed to safely move your vehicle to the hard shoulder, switch on those hazard warning lights - safety first, folks!

Make sure you and your passengers exit the vehicle on the passenger (left hand) side, move behind the safety barrier, and call for assistance using a roadside emergency phone or your trusty mobile phone. Give the Highways Agency a ring on their 24-hour helpline at 0300 123 5000 - they will give you advice on what to do next.

Remember, if you're not a trained mechanic, don't try to fix your vehicle yourself. That's what the pros are for!

Once the Highways Agency has helped you off the motorway, give your breakdown company a call to arrange for your car to get sorted.
